Michael R. Hughes- Bend Attorney
In a world full of cookie-cutters and conformity, every now and then, you
come across someone who is just a little bit different. These folks tend
to swim upstream and hear a drum beating that nobody else hears. When
you encounter someone like this you immediately know it. Their passion
emanates from their very being. A certain intensity burns in their eyes.
There always seems to be a purpose when you are in their presence.
Michael R. Hughes is such a person. When you meet him, you immediately
recognize something is different about this attorney. Mr. Hughes grew
up a farm kid from eastern Nebraska, an area known for hard-working, no-nonsense
people. He attended high school in southwest Missouri in a blue-collar
factory town on the edge of the Ozarks. Mr. Hughes has worked in farm
fields, factories, lumber yards, construction sites, and as a security
guard, prior to going to law school. Mr. Hughes had no connections to
the legal world when he left home after high school and embarked on the
journey to become a trial lawyer. He knew more people in need of legal
services than those that could provide them. Mr. Hughes' goal was
to become a lawyer. Not to chase power or fortunes for himself, but to
fight for justice and freedom for others.
By the late 1980's Mr. Hughes was already aware of the police state
that was enveloping the nation, caused in large part by the "War
on Drugs". Mr. Hughes has been a critic of prohibition since he was
old enough to think clearly. He had a particular interest in studying
controlled substance laws. This lead Mr. Hughes to the study criminal
law in college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice
from the University of Nebraska in 1995.
Mr. Hughes then went on to study at Drake University Law School in Des
Moines, IA. He graduated with a Juris Doctor Degree in 1999. While in
law school, Mr. Hughes continued his studies of criminal law and justice.
He also studied litigation and Agricultural law. While in law school,
Mr. Hughes was a law clerk for the United Stated Department of Agriculture,
Wetland Restoration Team.
Shortly after graduating from law school in 1999, Mr. Hughes was licensed
to practice law in Minnesota. He started doing criminal defense work in
Moorhead, Minnesota in December of 1999. As a hard-fighting criminal defense
attorney, Mr. Hughes has handled every conceivable type of criminal matter.
He developed a
reputation as a fierce trial lawyer and advocate for his clients.
Mr. Hughes attended and graduated from the
Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in 2006. For several years, Mr. Hughes was also an adjunct professor of
Criminal Law and Procedure at Minnesota State University – Moorhead.
By 2007, Mr. Hughes was almost entirely focused on personal injury cases,
including automobile accidents, slips, falls, dog bites, pedestrians hit
by cars, dram shop cases, toxic tort class action suits, excessive force/civil
rights, and other types of personal injury cases. Mr. Hughes has develop
a special place in his heart for personal injury cases and the seemingly
constant uphill battle people face trying to be fully and fairly compensated
when they are injured by others.
In 2011, Mr. Hughes relocated to the west coast and has now opened a law
office in beautiful downtown Bend, Oregon. He is currently working on
the conclusion of his first novel,
High Way, the first book in a series called
High, Higher and Highest: A Trilogy of Prohibition Parables. Mr. Hughes is licensed to practice law in Minnesota, Nebraska and Oregon.
Mr. Hughes possess the rare combination of passion, instinct and experience
that is necessary to make a great trial lawyer. A passionate advocate
for the wrongfully accused and injured. A street-smart person, with the
type of sharp instincts needed to make tough decisions in the heat of
battle. A legal warrior with experience in the trenches, who understands
that freedom and justice flow from victory.
